word of the week - boisterous
idiom of the week - I'm on top of the world
Wordly Wise Unit 7

In reading this week we will be finishing our class read aloud Animal House and Iz.   The students listen for the author's use of figurative language as they enjoy the zany story line of a fun-loving 21st century family.  Iz and her three zany stepbrothers own many pets, but they don't have a dog.  They plan to 'trick' their parents into getting a dog by owning so many other creepy, crawly pets that their parents will finally give up and allow them to own a dog. However, things don't go as planned when the hedgehog dies and Jack gets psittacosis from the parrot.

In our reader's notebooks we took notes on THEME.  Theme is the message or lesson(s) that the author wants the reader to take away from the story.  We are reading shorter stories daily to discuss the theme.

Last Friday we read  Surfer Chick by Kristi Dempsey. It'shilarious.  The themes include believing in yourself and perseverance.

In writing we are brainstorming topics for our persuasive essays.

Please enjoy a few photos of the students Figuratively Speaking posters.  They are all wonderful.
