First Week Of school

Mrs. Conley is reading OCDaniel by Wesley King

Class Read aloud = Be a Perfect Person In Just Three Days

Happy Friday!

We had a very busy and productive first week of school! Everyone has already gotten used to their blue and white day schedules.  There has been a lot of chatter about how fun it is to walk to their classes by themselves like big kids.  On Wednesday we met our 8th grade buddies. We meet with our buddies once a month, and during this time we celebrate our Citizen of the Month awards and we have a related activity that we do together. These activities are both academic and community related.  In the Teton homeroom we had 5 name doubles so we matched those students that share the same first names together.  Neat! We attached a few pictures below.

Our orange homework folders are set up with names.  The homework calendar is in the front sleeve while the students’ schedules are in the back. Please help us to bring these back and forth to school daily.

During reading we went to the library and Ms.Stuhr introduced us to our fabulous library and shared her library expectations.  Ms. Stuhr and Mrs. Conley share book talks during library times. The students received bookmarks with their library numbers that they will have here through 8th grade. Reading classes go to the library every week as a class and throughout the week students are welcome to return and exchange books.

In language arts we are working on our Best Part of Me short paragraphs.  This fun activity goes with the picture book The Best Part of Me by Wendy Ewald.  We hope to have most of these fun paragraphs displayed for Tuesdays Open House.

This week in math we began reviewing our math facts.  We’ve learned two new games, Towers and Rollin’ With the Facts, to help us with our fact fluency.  We also began a get to know you activity called, “Me, By the Numbers.”  Students are choosing eight numbers that describe them in some way.  I’m excited to see their finished product.  We are beginning our first Everyday Math Unit which focuses on perimeter, area, and volume.

In science we have been learning about our brain and how it works.  We learned that making mistakes and struggling with ideas actually helps our brains grow.  We will come back to this idea all year.

The kids are settling in beautifully learning classroom procedures and have been very insightful as they worked together to come up with shared expectations for our classrooms.  We’ll share these with you at open house on Tuesday.  They have been delightful and we are looking forward to our year with them.

Thanks,
Karen & Kelly

WELCOME BACK

Welcome to Fifth Grade!

Hello!  We are so excited to work with you this year and can’t wait to meet you. Mrs. Jagolinzer (Mrs. Jag for short) will be one of your fifth grade teachers this year.  She will teach math, science and social studies, and Mrs. Conley will be teaching language arts and reading.

Mrs. Jag lives in Cumberland with her husband and their younger son, Samuel, her dog, Vince, and her cats, Ella and Louis.   Ben, her older son, will be a junior at Kenyon College in Ohio this fall.  Sam will be a senior in high school.  She has had a wonderful summer.  She and her husband spent time hiking, swimming, going to lots of concerts and she even managed to reupholster a chair for her husband’s office.

Mrs. Conley lives in South Portland with her husband and their three children.  Her oldest children, Shannon and Patrick, are twins and they are both seniors in college.  Patrick is majoring in sports management and criminal justice at SMCC. Shannon is a nursing major at St. Anselm.  Shannon also runs for the cross country team. She is aiming to make it to the Division II Nationals this year.  Mrs. Conley’s youngest daughter, Kayla, will be a freshman at Scarborough High School  where she will play soccer, basketball, and lacrosse. They, too, have enjoyed every minute of their summer.  Some of their special moments included family time at Higgins Beach in Scarborough, and hiking, kayaking, and biking in Acadia National Park.

We hope you and your family have had a wonderful summer as well.  We are looking forward to hearing about your summer adventures when you return to school on Tuesday, September 5th.  We will be working and playing hard this year.  Between Mrs. Conley and Mrs. Jag you can expect about forty-five minutes to an hour of homework each night.  Budgeting your time this year will be an important skill.  You can expect homework on Monday through Thursday nights with the weekends generally free for family and fun.

Fifth graders use their math facts every day. You’ve got a bit more time to play Yahtzee, cribbage, bake recipes, play Monopoly, or any other activity that helps you master your facts.  You can even call out math facts as you’re driving to the beach. ☺  We will use all of our multiplication, division, addition, and subtraction facts this year.  You can find some additional activities on our teacher pages.  We know you can do it!

Mrs. Conley’s daughter, Kayla, just finished reading a favorite series of hers.  If you haven’t had a chance yet to settle down with a good book, it’s not too late.

We will organize our school supplies during the first few days of school.  The school supply list can be found at http://hms.yarmouthschools.org/supply-lists. The scissors that you bring in will be put into a community bin to be kept in the classroom.

Enjoy the last few weeks of your summer.  Rest, relax, and have fun.  We can’t wait to meet you.  It’s going to be a fun year!

See you soon,

Mrs. Jag & Mrs. Conley
